What is molecular hydrogen (H2)?

With every breath of air we inhale, our bodies are being attacked by toxic free radicals (unstable molecules with unpaired electrons) through the molecular process of oxidative stress, also known as “oxidation.” We are also exposed to these damaging free radicals through a variety of external factors including: exposure to UV radiation, air pollution, toxins, sleep deprivation, stress, cigarette smoke, electromagnetic fields from electronic devices, poor nutrition, exercise, and more. In an attempt to neutralize themselves, these destructive free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule and “steal” its electron. As a result, the “attacked” molecule turns into a free radical and sets off a chain reaction throughout the body.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) is a gas consisting of two bonded hydrogen atoms. Neurodegenerative Diseases

As the control center of the body, regulating the functioning of all other organ systems, the brain’s increased utilization of oxygen inherently lends itself to greater susceptibility to oxidative stress and free radical damage. Interestingly, although the brain accounts for only 2% of the body’s total weight, it consumes more than 20% of the body’s total oxygen supply in order to function optimally. Under typical conditions, approximately 1-2% of the body’s oxygen supply is converted into reactive oxygen species (ROS) or the most harmful types of free radicals. Thus, given its heightened dependence on oxygenation, the brain fundamentally produces excessive ROS, increasing the risk of damage and ultimately neurological diseases. Furthermore, in addition to the brain’s natural metabolic mechanisms, environmental factors such as pollutants, smoke, UV radiation, toxic chemicals, etc. can escalate levels of oxidative stress and ROS throughout the body.


Although the body’s endogenous (within the cell) antioxidant defense system is typically equipped to mitigate the harmful effects of ROS, heightened levels of such free radicals can potentially damage these defenses and ultimately contribute to the onset and exacerbation of various neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, in an aging brain, a greater percentage of the body’s oxygen supply results in ROS due to the body’s generally weaker antioxidant self-defense system. As such, the discrepancy between excessive ROS and decreased antioxidant levels causes greater damage to the neurons (brain cells), DNA, RNA, mitochondria, and proteins within the brain.


While aging has long been established to be the most common risk factor, a growing body of research has implicated the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the development and progression of various forms of dementia (neurodegenerative diseases), including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), amongst others.


Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by slowly progressive structural and(or) functional deterioration of neurons (brain cells), eventually leading to cell death. Although their underlying cause has yet to be fully elucidated, a growing body of literature implicates that excess amounts of oxidative stress and ROS greatly contribute to the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Collectively, oxidative stress and ROS may provoke cellular damage, impairment in the DNA repair system, and mitochondrial dysfunction – key components in the acceleration of aging and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. Also termed neurocognitive disorders (with subtypes of mild and major depending on severity) and dementia (in the more severe cases), the onset is usually gradual and often times the subtle shifts in cognitive functioning leave the condition unrecognized and untreated until the later stages of the disease process. Although each subtype has its own unique set of symptoms and clinical presentation, some common symptoms may include:

Subtypes of Dementia:


Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) - As the most common cause of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is defined by progressive neuronal (brain cell) loss and the accumulation of proteins, including amyloid-beta plaques (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tau tangles. Although the most common symptoms are poor memory (especially for recent events) and thinking skills, individuals can also have difficulty with planning and organizing, abstraction, and language, amongst others.


Parkinson’s Disease (PD) –Parkinson’s disease is characterized by selective neuronal loss in the region of the brain responsible for movement, known as the substantia nigra. Although symptom presentation will vary from person to person, the most common symptoms associated with PD include tremors (rhythmic shaking) and slowness of muscle movement (bradykinesia).


Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTD) – Frontotemporal lobar degeneration is a much less common neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Clinical presentation of FTD results in personality and behavioral changes  (i.e. lack of self-awareness or concern for others) as well as language difficulties (i.e. difficulty recognizing and naming familiar objects).


Lewy Body Disease (LBD) – With onset typically between the ages 50 and 85, LBD may be hard to differentiate from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, as symptom presentation is quite similar. Also known as dementia with Lewy bodies, LBD is characterized by protein deposits (called Lewy bodies) that develop in nerve cells in regions of the brain responsible for thinking, memory, and movement. Symptoms vary but may include visual hallucinations, movement disorders (tremors, rigid muscles, slowed movement, etc.), cognitive difficulty (difficulty with concentration, attention, problem solving, etc.), sleep problems, apathy, and sadness.


Vascular Disease (VD) – Also known as vascular dementia, VD is characterized by a decline in thinking skills caused by conditions that block or reduce the blood flow to the brain. Without proper oxygenation and nutrients, the brain cells begin to die off. Vascular dementia can occur following stroke, with sudden changes in thinking and perception such as confusion, disorientation, trouble speaking or understanding speech, or visual impairment.


Prion Disease – Also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), are a group of rare neurodegenerative diseases associated with the build up of an abnormal form of naturally occurring cellular proteins termed ‘prions’ in the brain. Prion disease is grouped according to whether it is sporadic, inherited, or acquired. Common symptoms include memory/cognitive decline (i.e. difficulty thinking) behavioral and mood changes (i.e. apathy, aggression, anxiety, depression, etc.), communication difficulties (i.e. dysarthria [slurred speech], difficulty understanding speech), movement problems (i.e. gait and balance disturbance leading to unsteadiness [ataxia]), and at times even seizures.    


Huntington’s Disease (HD) – An inherited disease that causes the progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the brain. Typically the first signs of HD occur between the ages of 30 and 40, however, onset can begin earlier (prior to age 20 is known as juvenile HD) or later. Symptoms fall under 3 categories including motor (i.e. chorea or involuntary jerking, impaired gait and balance, etc.), cognitive (i.e. difficulty organizing/planning, lack of impulse control, etc.) and psychiatric (i.e. social withdrawal, sadness, apathy).


Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – As a disease of the nervous system, MS is characterized by the deterioration of the myelin sheath (the protective lining of nerve cells), slowing down or blocking messages between your brain and body. The immune system attacks these protective nerve fibers, causing a wide range of symptoms including: muscle weakness, visual disturbance, trouble with coordination and balance, thinking and memory problems, and muscle weakness. Ultimately, symptom presentation depends on the amount and specific type of nerve damage that occurs.


Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – As the most common motor neuron disease in adults, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that destroys the nerve cells connecting the brain to the muscles. Once the neurons die, the brain is no longer able to initiate and control muscle movement. Eventually, as the disease progresses, all individuals will experience gradual muscle weakness and paralysis.


HIV associated Dementia (HAD) – Dementia due to human immunodeficiency virus, although quite rare, can form as a result of the severe inflammation caused by HIV throughout the brain and body. Only 2-3% of patients who have HIV are diagnosed with dementia, however, it is not uncommon for these individuals to experience fluctuations in cognitive abilities.


Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) – Progressive supranuclear palsy is an uncommon neurodegenerative diseases that causes serious problems with walking, balance, and eye movements. In the later stages of the disease, individuals may also experience difficulty swallowing. Other symptoms closely resemble that of Parkinson’s disease.


Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) – Caused by degeneration of the areas of the brain responsible for speech and language, PPA has 3 different subtypes (nonfluent/agrammatic, logopenic, and semantic) and is typically caused by frontotemporal lobar degeneration or Alzheimer’s disease. The majority of these individuals begin to have difficulty expressing themselves with language, while memory typically stays intact.
