What is molecular hydrogen (H2)?

With every breath of air we inhale, our bodies are attacked by toxic free radicals (unstable molecules with unpaired electrons) formed through the molecular process of oxidation. We are also exposed to these damaging free radicals through a variety of external factors including: exposure to UV radiation, air pollution, toxins, sleep deprivation, stress, cigarette smoke, electromagnetic fields from electronic devices, poor nutrition, exercise, and more. In an attempt to neutralize themselves, these destructive free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule and “steal” its electron. As a result, the “attacked” molecule turns into a free radical and sets off a chain reaction throughout the body.

Additionally, an athlete will also experience tremendous fluid loss, increasing the likelihood of dehydration and more serious consequences.

 

Making recovery time a priority permits for tissue repair and for these energy stores to be replenished. Without adequate recovery and rest, the body will continue to break down, counteracting all of the intensive training and hours put in to strengthen and improve performance.

 

Furthermore, given the repetition and consistency of athletic training, the body’s capacity to adapt to exercise eventually makes it second nature. Once this occurs, the body inherently requires greater stress in order to continue to make improvements. However, implementing too much work too quickly, can lead to potential injuries and damage, further emphasizing the importance of deliberate rest and recovery.

Short vs. Long-Term Recovery

 

Its important to consider immediate or short-term recovery (such as from a workout or event) versus long-term recovery, which should be incorporated into any year round training regimen, when thinking of maximizing sports performance.

 

Short-term Recovery

 

Also termed “active recovery,” refers to the recovery period immediately following a workout. Engaging in low-intensity training either immediately following an all-out effort or workout, or on days following the workout can help boost overall performance by:

  • Reducing muscular fatigue

  • Enhancing protein synthesis (the process by which protein is increased in the muscles), which can further reduce the likelihood of muscles breaking down and increase muscle mass.

 

  • Improving soft tissue repair (muscles, tendons, ligaments)

 

  • Allowing an athlete to keep up with the high-intensity work load while still continuing to train

Long-term Recovery

Long-term recovery refers to the recovery period implemented into a year-round or seasonal training protocol. This includes scheduling recovery days or weeks between vigorous workouts and rest breaks after a challenging season. Moreover, it also means athletes and coaches need to apply individually tailored, demanding workouts and efficient rest periods along with proper skill enhancing exercises to promote athletic progress. By consistently challenging the body and then ensuring ample recovery, an athlete ensures the restoration required to continue to excel in his or her sport season after season.

   

Our Body’s Response to Intense Athletic Performance

Muscular Fatigue

Before we dig into how molecular hydrogen can significantly enhance recovery, we need to first establish some clarity about how muscles get fatigued. For many decades, “lactic acid” has been blamed for the burning sensation and fatigue during intense exercise. If we could only somehow reduce lactic acid, the muscles wouldn’t tire as easily. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In reality, the body does not actually create lactic acid, but rather lactate and hydrogen ions (H+), the latter of which is an acid. Lactate is actually a very powerful fuel synthesized through certain processes inside our body. Here’s what really happens from beginning to end, in as simplest terms as possible:

 

In order for us to "do" anything – move, eat, think, etc., our cells need something called ATP, the “energy currency” used by the entire body, including our muscles. Most of the time this process is “aerobic,” meaning our cells use oxygen to convert nutrients to ATP. However, when the energy (ATP) demands of the body are greater than the ability of our cells to regenerate aerobically, our cells utilize a process called glycolysis.

 

Essentially our muscles are able to quickly convert glucose (sugar) into pyruvate, which can then be synthesized into ATP. The problem is that this process leaves behind another harmful byproduct – acidic hydrogen ions (H+). An accumulation of hydrogen ions will cause “acidosis,” aka a lowered pH level, which leads to the burning sensation we feel during exercise.
 

Where does lactate come in to the equation? If too much pyruvate is created during intense exercise to the point that the mitochondria cannot convert it quickly enough back to ATP, excess pyruvate will then take some hydrogen ions and convert itself to lactate. This means lactate is actually created through removal of hydrogen ions, so without lactate, we would feel the burning sensation along with muscular fatigue FASTER!

 

What’s more, lactate is quite useful for our muscles, as they can actually convert a good amount of excess lactate to ATP inside the mitochondria while the rest leaks through the blood. This means that if our mitochondria are functioning more effectively, more lactate can be used as energy. Lactate leaked through the blood can be shuttled into other muscles, the heart and brain for energy, or it can be converted back to sugar by the liver.

Oxidative Stress

Not everything about exercise is beneficial for your body. In fact, when you exercise, you’re actually DAMAGING your body, and it’s in the recovery periods that your muscles rebuild, adapt, and get stronger. Did you know that one major byproduct of strenuous exercise can make your muscles sore and weak, make you more susceptible to getting sick, and even damage your DNA? This natural byproduct is called “oxidative stress.” We produce free radicals as a natural byproduct of cellular respiration to produce energy for daily functions, and when we exercise, the free radical production kicks into high gear, resulting in increased oxidative stress.  High levels of oxidative stress have been shown to contribute to muscle weakness and fatigue, DNA damage, compromised immunity, and muscle soreness post-exercise.
