If you aren’t aware of oxidative stress and how you can combat it with molecular hydrogen, you need to read this immediately – it may just end up saving your life. And if you think you know, you may not realize the full story. Read on to find out how this one key concept can completely alter the trajectory of your life, both now and in the long run.
Let’s play a game of association. If you hear the term “free radicals,” what do you immediately think of? If the words “bad,” “disease,” “damage,” or something similar popped up in your head, you wouldn’t be alone. Unfortunately, you’re not entirely correct – the real truth about free radicals is quite a bit more complicated, but we’ll try to make some sense of it here.
Free radicals are, in essence, a class of unstable and highly reactive molecules that are missing an electron. In order to stabilize themselves, they must steal electrons from other molecules around them, which destabilizes those new molecules and could potentially set off a chain reaction. Contrary to what many assume, there are many types of free radicals, and they play a dual role in our body, as they can be both harmful AND beneficial.
Free radicals are produced in a variety of ways. Some are natural products of cellular metabolism, breathing, digestion, and exercise. Some are produced by the body in response to illness or injury, and these free radicals are actually quite essential to our immune response. And some may be the results of environmental factors such as exposure to ultra-violet radiation, pollution, cigarette smoke, and herbicides.
Our body has a way to attempt to balance out these free radicals by producing “antioxidants,” molecules that are able to donate an electron to the free radicals without becoming unstable themselves, thereby neutralizing the free radicals. The body is able to do this quite well most of the time, but if free radical production becomes excessive and overpowers the antioxidants available, cellular damage – including damage to our DNA – can occur. This scenario, where free radicals are out of balance with antioxidants, produces what’s called “oxidative stress” and chronic inflammation, which is considered to be a main contributor to the progression of chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s, along with premature aging and muscle fatigue.
So how can we protect ourselves from free radical damage and oxidative stress? Do we just go to the store and buy the biggest jar we can find with the word “antioxidant” on it? That’s probably not a good idea. While antioxidant supplements are an absolutely enormous industry (about $500 million), there have been absolutely no beneficial effects observed from them. In fact, high doses of antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene have been shown to actually interfere with and damage our health. Remember, the key here is to find a balance between these free radicals and antioxidants. Certain free radicals act as signaling molecules for various tissues, modulate blood flow and prevent blood clots, and even fight off viruses, bacteria, and tumors.
But don’t worry, there are two incredibly effective things that we can do to protect ourselves from free radical damage and oxidative stress. First, we can get a major healthy antioxidant boost from consistently eating loads of whole plant foods such as green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. The antioxidants within these foods can be used by our body in the perfect levels, dramatically reducing our risk of oxidative stress and disease.
Secondly and perhaps more exciting, scientific studies have illuminated a groundbreaking, natural, and incredibly effective way to combat oxidative stress in a balanced, powerful, and selective way: molecular hydrogen therapy. Molecular hydrogen, the smallest molecule on earth, works in 3 distinct ways:
1. It is a powerful and selective antioxidant, meaning that it only scavenges the toxic and damaging free radicals (sources of inflammation, DNA damage, and chronic disease) while leaving the beneficial free radicals alone. Because it is the smallest molecule in the universe, it can enter cells, including brain cells, and neutralize certain free radicals that other antioxidants cannot get to.
2. It helps the body trigger its own antioxidant and cell-protective chemicals, boosting the immune system naturally.
3. It helps to improve the communication between cells, which has beneficial metabolic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cell death effects.
In essence, molecular hydrogen is the ONLY antioxidant therapy that is able to bring the body back into balance with no negative side effects whatsoever.
